11-19-17 @North Heartland: Holiday Season Approaches!

Hard to believe but Thanksgiving is less than a week away and soon after that we'll be cranking up for some major Christmas events at NHCC! It's already beginning to look pretty festive here in our building.

Speaking of Christ-mas  ... once our current series, Maximizing Your Personality, ends (this Sunday we'll be talking about the "keep it between the lines" C personality type), we're going to begin a "mega series" focused on Jesus - who He was, what He said and did, and why that makes any difference at all to people living in the 21st century.

I've been thinking about doing this for a while but just recently I've felt strongly that now is the time for two reasons:

1. Recent scandals in "high places" (entertainment and government) and increased incidents of mass violence have rightfully led to widespread shock and condemnation, yet no one in our culture seems to be offering a better way to live. But there is a better way: the way of Jesus.

2. Churches need to be much more intentional about reaching younger people many of whom have been deeply influenced by the increasingly anti-Christian bias of our culture. One ray of hope is the discovery in recent surveys that, despite their doubts about the institution of church (along with many other institutions), millennials and "generation Z" are still very curious about Jesus.

Because of those reasons ... and because it's Christmas ... and people are more open to an invitation to church at this time of the year than any other ... we're going to go all in on inviting our community to NHCC as we discover who Jesus really is. Next week, we'll be mailing 19,000 homes within a five mile radius of our building an invitation to the first installment of the series which we're calling "This Is Jesus." (The week after that, those same homes will receive an invitation to our amazing Celebration of Christmas event which happens December 19, 20 and 21).

Here's the plan for the series:

This Is Jesus: Origins

On December 25th almost 2.5B people around the world will celebrate a birth that happened long, long ago in a faraway place. Join us as we begin an extended review of the life and influence of Jesus of Nazareth, beginning with questions of his origin.

12/03 Can a Virgin Conceive?

The story of Jesus begins with an incredible event that can only be described as "an act of God." But why should anyone believe God even exists?

12/10 Man or Myth?

Christianity says that Jesus was a real person who lived in a real place and time. What evidence supports that claim?

12/17 Jesus BC (Before Christmas)

Christians say that Jesus was God in-the-flesh. What exactly does that mean? And what difference does it make?

I hope you'll take advantage of this opportunity to invite your family and friends who are not Christians or church attenders.

After the first of the year, we'll resume the mega-series with part two - This Is Jesus: Dawn of a New Day. More details on that next month!

Before I let you go, two quick things ...

1. If you were planning to have your picture taken this Sunday for the NHCC photo directory, be advised that our photographer is unavailable because of an unforeseen circumstance. Therefore, we're extending the photo-op dates to Sunday December 3rd and 10th.

2. If you're planning to participate in Black Friday via Amazon, remember that you can support NHCC by going to smile.amazon.com instead of www.amazon.com and selecting NHCC as your charity of choice. A portion of whatever you spend will then make its way to our ministry. Very cool.

Ok, that's all for now. Have a great weekend and we'll see you Sunday!

Rick
